Understanding Our Own Cultural Identities and Experiences
The Educational Justice Professional Learning Series, Session 1:
On Sept. 18, 2023, the EAC-South and the Center for Black Educator Development hosted a virtual learning session as part of a three-webinar series on building cultural proficiency in schools.
Everyone has a cultural identity – the characteristics we learn and share with family members and people in our communities. While cultural identity connects people in many ways, it can also be a source of cultural misperceptions – often subconsciously. With this presentation, educators can take steps to reflect on their own cultural identities and consider how their experiences shape them as teachers and leaders. This is an important step toward ensuring safe and supportive environments for all students.
Speaker: Taylor Howard, Director of Professional Development, The Center for Black Educator Development
